PRESENT CONTINUOUS

The basics

Brief explanation:

Right now, Danielle is in her car. She is on her way to school.
She’s driving to school (=She is driving to school)

This means: she is driving NOW, at the time os speaking and the action is not finished yet. Something someone started and has not finished yet cause is in the middle of doing it.

Alex is talking to a friend on the phone. He says: “I’m reading a really good novel at the moment. It is about a man who…. “
He said “I’m reading” but he was not reading the novel at the time of speaking. He just means that he started reading it, and has not finished it yet. He is on the middle of doing it.

I am driving.
He/She/It is driving.
We/You/ They are driving.

More complex meaning and use

Some of the common time expressions to use with this tense consider periods around noun (such as today, this week, this year). For example: You are studying hard this week.

Much more complex meaning and use.

We can also use this structure when we talk about change that has started to happen. We can use this structure with verbs such as get, become, start, begin, change, improve, increase, rise, fall, grow (of course using the ING ending) For example: Your English is improving day by day.

Advanced use of the structure.

Sometimes, we also use this structure to refer to the future. However, we will check this information in further lessons.
