We use the simple present to talk about things in general. We use it to say something that happens all the time or repeatedly, or that something is true or general.

I work He works
You work She works
We work It works
They work

In other words we use this tense to talk about habits or routines (they are constant)

I wake up at 7:00
I drive to school.
I have lunch with my friends.
I start work at noon.
I never sleep early.

We also use this tense to talk about feelings or opinions, which are generally constant.

I love my husband.
I like chocolate
I hate lies.

Finally, we also use this tense to express general statements, something that we can prove is true or false.

Water boils at 100ºC.
The brain weights 30% of our body.

We use DO or DOES as an auxiliary to ask questions or for the negative structure.

Do I/you/we/they work?
Does he/she/it do?

I/you/we/they don’t work.
He/she/it doesn’t work.
