VOCABULARY LESSON 7: Prefixes and roots

A root is the base of a word to which prefixes and suffixes can be added to create ew words. Prefixes go before the root and suffixes follow the root. Prefixes and roots of academic words often come from Latin Greek. There are roots that describe number, size or value, movement, and relationship.

Roots that describe number one

uni- uniform, unify

mon- monopoly, monarch

sol- solitary

Roots that describe number two

du- dual, duplicate

bi- bicycle, bilingual, biped

Roots that describe size or value

min- miniature, minimum

micro- microscopic

mega- megaphone

macro- macroeconomics

magni- magniture, magnify
